Who cares for a society that cannot care for itself? This is not a question Germany is facing for the first time.
As early as the 1960s, 70s and 80s, nurses from Kerala in southern India came to Germany, Austria and Switzerland to help address the shortage of care workers at the time. WHO CARED documents their life stories, bringing visibility to a largely overlooked history of female migration.
On 15 November, the WHO CARED online archive officially goes live. This continuously growing collection of videos and personal stories tells of people who left their home countries to work in care – and how their experiences shaped not only their own lives, but also their families, their countries of origin and the societies they became part of.
The stories of the women from Kerala are just the beginning. From here, WHO CARED aims to grow across countries and communities, evolving into a global archive of care migration. Because care migration is not a new phenomenon – and today, it is more relevant than ever.
To kick off the archive, we invite you to Filmforum NRW (Museum Ludwig) in Cologne on November 15. Former nurses will tell their stories, the WHO CARED team will discuss the importance of oral history for research and the community, and the vision of the archive will be presented. In addition, filmmaker Nevin George will show his short film »Mary«.
Admission is free. Please register at who-cared.com/launch
Please note: The event will be held in German.
