Growing up as a Hindustani young woman in the Netherlands, I was always looking for a place to belong. Often times I felt too Dutch for the Hindustani community and too Indian for the Dutch community. Born and raised in the west, yet rooted in a beautiful culture and community that isn’t always acknowledged by the west. My creative perspective allowed me to turn the challenges I faced into something constructive and empowering. Not fitting the mold meant I was able to bring something new and redefine notions of being Indian or being Dutch. This is what masala means to me. The creative liberty to explore, experiment and innovate. To spice it up and get inspired. It’s all about the mix!
